Ledger and flashing

Framing for snow load
Joist sizing and spacing for the load a covered or uncovered deck carries here, not the minimum that works in a mild climate.
Decking
Composite, cedar, or pressure-treated. We will tell you honestly how each one weathers under twenty hours of June sun.
Railings and stairs
Code-height railings with proper baluster spacing, and stairs with consistent rise so you are not tripping on the top step.
Repairs and resurfacing
New decking and rail on a frame that checks out structurally, which is often the best value on a twenty-year-old deck.

Frost Heave Is What Actually Destroys Anchorage Decks
Water in the soil freezes and expands, and anything sitting on a shallow footing gets lifted. Do that for five winters and a deck that started level is pulling away from the house.
Footings have to go below the frost line, which in the Anchorage bowl means digging deeper than a lot of homeowners expect. Helical piers are an option where excavation is difficult or the soil is poor, and on the Hillside they are often the better answer.
The second Alaska factor is snow. A deck under a roof valley can carry a serious drift load, and the joist sizing has to reflect that. We look at where the snow comes off the roof before we size the frame.

Do I need a permit to build a deck in Anchorage?

Usually yes once the deck is above a certain height or attached to the house. We confirm with the Municipality and pull it as part of the job.
Composite or wood for an Alaska deck?

Composite holds color and does not need annual sealing, which matters when your maintenance window is three months long. Cedar looks better and costs less up front but needs to be re-sealed. Pressure-treated is the budget option and moves the most.
Can you rebuild just the surface of my deck?

If the frame and footings are sound, yes, and it is often the best money you can spend. We pull a board and inspect the joists and ledger first. If the ledger was never flashed, that gets fixed regardless.
When can decks be built here?

Footings need unfrozen ground, so roughly May through September for new builds. Surface replacement on an existing frame can run later into the fall.
