Flooring & Tile in Anchorage
Hardwood, luxury vinyl, tile, and carpet installed over a subfloor that has been checked and prepped first.
Flooring problems are almost always subfloor problems. A squeak is a loose panel. A cracked grout line is a joist that deflects. A vinyl plank that separates is a floor that was not flat within tolerance before anyone started.
We check the subfloor first: flatness, moisture, fastening, and deflection. Then we prep it. Only then does new flooring go down.
We install hardwood and engineered wood, luxury vinyl plank, porcelain and ceramic tile, natural stone, and carpet.

Screwing down loose panels, self-leveling where the slab or floor is out of tolerance, and replacing damaged sheathing.
Hardwood and engineered
Nail-down or glue-down depending on the substrate, acclimated in the house before installation rather than on the truck.
Luxury vinyl plank
The practical default for basements, entries, and rentals in Anchorage. Waterproof, warm underfoot, and forgiving of a slab.
Tile and stone
Uncoupling membrane where it is needed, proper mortar coverage, and layout planned so the cut tiles land somewhere sensible.
Heated floors
Electric mat under tile in bathrooms, entries, and any room over a garage or crawlspace.
Transitions and trim
Thresholds, reducers, base and shoe, with the heights worked out before the flooring is ordered.
Alaska specific
What Alaska Entries and Mudrooms Do to a Floor
Anchorage entries take snow, road sand, and calcium chloride on boots seven months a year. That combination is abrasive and it is corrosive. Hardwood in an unprotected entry here does not stay looking good for long.
We usually recommend tile or a high-wear luxury vinyl in entries and mudrooms, with hardwood starting past the transition. If you want wood at the door, it needs a hard-wearing finish and a real mat system.
The other Alaska item is moisture in slabs and crawlspaces. We take a moisture reading on any slab before installing over it, because a wood floor glued to a slab that is still giving off moisture will cup and there is no fixing it after the fact.

What flooring is best for an Anchorage entry?

Porcelain tile or a commercial-grade luxury vinyl. Both handle the sand and salt that come in on boots from October through April. Add electric heat under tile if the entry sits over a garage or crawlspace and it stops being the cold spot in the house.
Can you install hardwood over a concrete slab?

Engineered wood, yes, with a moisture test and the right adhesive or underlayment. Solid hardwood directly on a slab is not a good idea here. We take a reading first rather than assuming.
Why is my tile grout cracking?

Usually joist deflection or a missing uncoupling membrane, not bad grout. Tile does not flex and the floor under it does. We check the span and deflection before quoting a tile floor, and we install a membrane where the numbers call for it.
Do you move furniture and haul the old flooring?

Yes to both. Furniture moved and returned, old flooring pulled and hauled off as part of the job.
