Exterior Painting in Anchorage
Full exterior repaints with the prep, primer, and product selection an Anchorage winter actually demands.
Exterior paint in Southcentral Alaska has a hard job. It goes through freeze-thaw cycles most of the year, takes UV from a sun that sits low and stays up for twenty hours in June, and gets hit with wind-driven rain from the Inlet.
Paint fails here for two reasons: it was applied to a surface that was not clean and dry, or it was applied outside the temperature window and never cured properly. We do not do either.
Our exterior work includes wash, scrape, sand, spot prime bare wood, caulk the joints that need it, and two finish coats. Trim, soffit, fascia, and doors are part of the scope, not an add-on.
Scope
What the Job Covers
Wash and surface prep
Low-pressure wash to strip chalking, pollen, and the road film that collects on the street side of every Anchorage house.
Scrape and sand
Loose and failing paint removed to a sound edge. Feather sanded so the transition does not telegraph through the new coat.
Priming
Bare wood and stained areas spot primed with the right primer for the substrate. Cedar and knots get a stain-blocking product.
Caulk and repair
Failed caulk cut out and replaced, rotted trim pieces swapped, and gaps that let water in closed before paint goes on.
Two finish coats
Sprayed and back-rolled or brushed depending on the siding profile, with the trim cut clean.
Decks, rails, and outbuildings
Stain or paint on decks, railings, fences, sheds, and detached garages as part of the same visit.

The Anchorage Exterior Painting Window
Realistically, exterior painting in Anchorage runs from late May through early September. The limit is not the air temperature on the label, it is the surface temperature overnight. Most coatings need the surface to stay above roughly 50 degrees through the cure, and a north-facing wall in late September does not.
That means booking matters. Exterior slots here fill early, and the crews still painting in October are usually the ones who could not fill their summer.
Product choice matters too. South and west elevations take enormous UV load during the long days, so those walls fade first. We spec a coating rated for it rather than a builder-grade paint that looks identical in the can.

Inspection and estimate
We walk the whole exterior, note failing areas and rot, and write a scope that says what gets scraped and what gets replaced.
- 02
Wash and dry
Wash first, then let it dry. In Anchorage that can mean waiting a day, and we would rather wait than trap moisture under a coating.
- 03
Prep and prime
Scrape, sand, repair, caulk, prime. This is the majority of the labor on any exterior job.

Paint and walk
Two coats, trim last, then a walk with you around the whole house before we pull the ladders.

When is the best time to paint a house exterior in Anchorage?

June through August is the reliable window. Late May and early September work if the forecast cooperates and the surface stays warm enough overnight to cure. We do not paint exteriors in October, and anyone who offers to is not doing you a favor.
How long does exterior paint last here?

On a properly prepped house with a quality coating, eight to twelve years on protected elevations and five to eight on the south and west sides that take the most sun. Cedar and previously failing surfaces are on the shorter end.
Do you replace rotted trim?

Yes. We identify it during the estimate and price the replacement separately so you can see it. Painting over soft wood is a waste of your money.
Do you pressure wash before painting?

We wash, but at the pressure the siding can take. High pressure drives water behind lap siding and forces it into end grain, which is exactly what you do not want under fresh paint.
